Two crypto billionaires donated £72 million to Reform UK in just two days. Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne each contributed £36 million, creating what is now the largest single donation on record to a British political party.
For me, the most interesting part is the timing.
Why £72 Million Arrived So Quickly
Delo originally planned to donate around £1 million every month until the next UK general election. Instead, he transferred the full £36 million upfront because Parliament is discussing new rules that could significantly restrict political donations, including limits affecting some overseas and recently returned British citizens, while crypto-based donations could temporarily be suspended.
In other words, if the rules might change tomorrow, Delo decided to act today. Then Harborne learned about the donation and matched it, reportedly driven partly by competitive instinct. One large commitment immediately triggered another.
Crypto Wealth Is Becoming Political Capital
Both donors have deep connections to the crypto industry. Delo co-founded BitMEX in 2014 and had already donated millions to Reform earlier this year, while Harborne is an investor associated with Tether and was already one of the party’s biggest financial supporters.
This is where the story becomes bigger than one political donation. Crypto created a new class of extremely wealthy entrepreneurs over the past decade, and some of that capital is now moving beyond exchanges, tokens and venture investments directly into politics.
Regulation Is Catching Up
At the same time, UK lawmakers are debating how this kind of money should enter the political system. One concern is transparency: governments argue that crypto transfers can make it harder to verify the true legal owner of funds compared with conventional banking payments.
Interestingly, there is no confirmation that these two £36 million donations were actually made in crypto. But the debate around them still matters.
Crypto spent years trying to become part of mainstream finance. Now that it has, the next question is already here: how much influence should crypto wealth have on mainstream politics? And £72 million arriving in just two days shows that this is no longer a theoretical discussion.
