Chain of Thoughts 2026–10–12

Trump announced an energy truce in Ukraine that Kyiv hadn’t heard about, while the Gulf war reached Riyadh’s main airport. Crypto’s biggest loss this weekend didn’t come from either war. It came from inside a hardware wallet.

The Verdict

Bitcoin — short term (3–5 months). $83,721, up 0.90%. Bitcoin dipped toward $82,200 on Saturday, then buyers pushed it back over $83,000 and it held a narrow $82,900–$83,100 band through Sunday morning #16. The latest print is 0.35% above Friday’s high near $83,430, the line that marks a real reclaim. It’s a weekend move with no ETF desk open to confirm it. The lean edges up from neutral, but it needs a daily close above $83,430 that survives Monday’s fund flows before it counts.

Bitcoin — long term (1–3 years). Bitcoin’s long-term case is a bearer asset whose rules no company can change: supply, settlement and ownership are enforced by the network, not a custodian. This weekend’s Ledger incident showed both sides of that. The protocol did exactly what it was supposed to do, and the losses came from tampered hardware sold through a reseller #1. Over one to three years, the asset’s integrity isn’t the question. The question is whether the tools for holding it get as hard to break as the asset itself.

Ethereum — short term. $2,529.47, up 0.81%, now 1.2% above $2,500. No fund flows over the weekend, so the nine-day ETF outflow streak carries into Monday unchanged. $2,300 (9.1% below) is still the line that ends the range. An inflow day is what turns $2,500 from a number price is sitting on into support.

Ethereum — long term. Ether’s long-term case is that it becomes the settlement layer for dollar stablecoins and tokenized assets, earning fees from activity that doesn’t care what ETF holders do in a given month. That case is built over years of usage, not weeks of flows. Fund selling can set the price in the short run. Whether the chain keeps getting used decides the long run.

Cardano — short term. $0.2534, down 0.55%. After Saturday’s 5% jump, ADA gave back a little and stayed 2.5% above its 200-day EMA at $0.2472. That’s the first test passed: the level held on a quiet pullback instead of being lost straight away. The $0.2632 breakout is 3.9% above.

Cardano — long term. Cardano’s long-term bet is that a slower, research-first chain wins business from regulated issuers who want verified code over speed. ADA’s roughly $9.5 billion market cap is a price on that bet. What would prove it is outside companies choosing to issue on Cardano with no tie to its foundation. Until then, that gap is what you’re paying for. Make your own call on whether it closes.

Solana and the rest. SOL $111.76, up 1.24%. BNB $753.83, up 0.46%. XRP $1.42, up 0.84%. Everything drifted up on light weekend volume with no coin-specific catalyst. Don’t read much into it.

Why The Market Is Here

A ceasefire was announced before one side heard about it. On Sunday, Trump posted that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate “energy ceasefire” and warned both sides not to break it #6. Zelenskyy said it was “news for me”, adding that Ukraine would agree if Russia did and asking Trump to say when it starts #7 #8. Moscow hadn’t confirmed anything. A similar announcement a month ago didn’t stop the strikes #8. Who is pushing and why: the target is Ukraine’s drone campaign against Russian refineries, the main reason diesel is scarce. A pause would help US pump prices three weeks before the midterms. Hours before the post, Ukraine hit a Yandex data centre for the third time #13, so the war is still widening its target list.

The Gulf war reached a capital’s airport. A Houthi strike on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport killed at least 12 people and injured more than 300, the third attack on the airport in a week #10. The Saudi-led coalition called it a war crime and promised a decisive response #9, and a further strike started a fire at the airport a day later #11. Trump said Washington was weighing joining Saudi strikes on the Houthis #10. BBC’s analysis called it another dangerous moment in an already tense conflict #12. Saudi Arabia is the world’s swing oil producer. When its capital is under fire, any pledge it makes on supply carries more risk.

Hormuz didn’t calm down either. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said a supertanker that took an unauthorised route with its navigation off hit a mine and caught fire. CENTCOM released footage of a jet bombing a Panama-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman to enforce the US blockade #14. Since the blockade was reimposed in mid-July, CENTCOM says it has turned back 135 ships and destroyed 10 Iran-linked tankers, while mediation to end the war has stalled #14.

So the weekend handed oil a split decision. Brent closed Friday near $104. Since then, the European war got a ceasefire claim nobody has confirmed, and the Gulf war got a new front in Saudi Arabia. Crypto was the only major market open to price it, and it went up slightly. That says less about bitcoin as a hedge and more about who trades on a Sunday: with no oil, bond or stock desks open, there was nobody to sell into the headlines. Oil reopens Sunday evening US time, after this window closes. That print is the real verdict on whether Riyadh outweighs the ceasefire post.

Fear & Greed slipped to 61 from 64 while price rose 0.9%. Sentiment cooled as the tape firmed, the opposite of last week, when the gauge recovered faster than price. A market getting less excited while it inches higher isn’t overheated. It’s skeptical, and skeptical markets are harder to flush.

Institutional Pulse

The weekend’s real crypto shock was about custody, not price. Ledger confirmed that a customer’s device bought through CryptoBilis, a Southeast Asian reseller, carried an unauthorized hardware implant #1 #4. On-chain investigator Specter estimates linked losses across bitcoin, ether and Tron may exceed $86 million. Ledger hasn’t verified that total and says its own systems show no sign of compromise #1 #2. Its advice: don’t initialize hardware wallets you haven’t set up yet, and consider moving funds to a wallet with a fresh recovery phrase. CryptoBilis has suspended sales of the affected inventory #3. The same day, Coldcard said it was investigating how a phishing link appeared on its X account #5.

Why this matters to how you hold. Institutions don’t buy hardware wallets from resellers. They use qualified custodians, multi-party key setups, and OTC desks that settle straight into those systems. Retail self-custody runs through a consumer supply chain, and that supply chain is now the attack surface. That doesn’t argue for ETF shares over coins. It argues for buying a device only from the manufacturer, setting the recovery phrase yourself on the device, and never typing it anywhere else. Who is pushing: attackers who’ve worked out that it’s easier to compromise the box before you open it than to break the cryptography inside.

Fund flows resume Monday. Friday’s $21.1 million bitcoin ETF inflow came after two days of heavy outflows, and October is still net negative on Farside’s tally #15. Monday’s print shows whether fund money follows the weekend move or fades it.

Banks report into 5% yields. The S&P 500 bull market turns four on Monday, up more than 115% from its October 2022 low #17. JPMorgan reports on Tuesday, and analysts will be watching deposit costs, loan growth and a deal pipeline that saw some IPOs pushed out of the quarter by higher Treasury yields #18. If the biggest US bank says yields are starting to hurt borrowers, the stock rally loses its main support, and risk appetite across the board, crypto included, tends to follow.

Calendar Watch

Tuesday, October 13. JPMorgan leads bank earnings, and Treasuries trade for the first time since Friday #18. The 10-year’s first print after a weekend of Gulf escalation is the macro number to watch. Above 5.30% puts last week’s 24-year high back in play. Under 5.20% would be real relief.

Signals Worth Watching

$83,430: the reclaim needs a close. Bitcoin is 0.35% above Friday’s high. A daily close above it that holds through Monday’s ETF session confirms the reclaim and opens the range toward the mid-$80,000s. A weekend print that fades on Monday makes $83,430 the top of the range.

$80,350. 4.0% below. Thursday’s low. A close under it brings the $77,000 on-chain cost cluster (8.0% below) into view.

ETH ETF day ten. Monday either extends the streak to ten days or ends it. The first inflow since September 26 is still the signal ether needs.

ADA at $0.2472. The 200-day EMA held on the first pullback. One more session above it and the level counts as support. A close back under it marks Saturday as a thin-book spike.

Riyadh and Brent. If oil reopens above Friday’s ~$104 on the airport strikes, the Gulf premium is rising, not just holding. If the US joins Saudi strikes on the Houthis, that’s a new front in the war, not a continuation of the old one.

Hardware-wallet fallout. If Ledger confirms more affected devices or other resellers, or if the loss estimate rises, expect a wave of fund movements as holders rotate to fresh wallets. That’s on-chain noise you shouldn’t mistake for selling.

What would change the thesis. Upside: a confirmed close above $83,430, Monday ETF inflows, Moscow confirming the energy ceasefire, Brent under $100. Downside: a close under $80,350, a US strike on the Houthis that pushes oil higher, the 10-year back above 5.30%, or bank guidance showing credit stress.

If I Had $100 This Month

Two wars sent opposite signals over one weekend, and the price barely moved. The more useful lesson was about custody: the coins were fine, and some of the devices weren’t.

$60 → BTC. It’s above Friday’s high with sentiment cooling, which is a better place to buy than the reverse.$25 → ETH. Nine days of fund selling haven’t broken $2,500, and you don’t need the streak to end to keep buying a steady slice.$15 → ADA. The 200-day EMA held on its first test, but the breakout isn’t confirmed, so it stays your smallest slice.

Hold actual coins. Not ETF shares, not equity proxies. Buy hardware wallets only from the manufacturer, and generate your recovery phrase on the device yourself.

This is how I’d think about it. Make your own call.
