Instead, they\u2019ve become <strong>life support<\/strong>. Designers add them\u00a0when:<\/p>\n<p>A button label makes no\u00a0senseThe action has unintended consequencesThe flow feels risky, but no one fixed\u00a0itLegal asked for a disclaimer, and nobody pushed\u00a0back<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re not signs of \u201ceducating the user.\u201d They\u2019re <strong>evidence the UI didn\u2019t do its\u00a0job.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Language as a\u00a0Crutch<\/h4>\n<p>Take a moment to count how many tooltips are <em>just definitions<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cA validator is a node that verifies blocks.\u201d<br \/>\u201cStaking locks your assets for a period of time.\u201d<br \/>\u201cThis message is off-chain and doesn\u2019t require\u00a0gas.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now ask:<br \/>Why did the interface <em>not<\/em> communicate that in the first place? It\u2019s the same as walking into a room and needing labels on every piece of furniture.<\/p>\n<p>At some point, <strong>you didn\u2019t design the room. <\/strong>You just labeled the\u00a0mess.<\/p>\n<h4>The Danger of Tooltip-Driven Design<\/h4>\n<p>What starts as a temporary patch becomes permanent UX debt. Designers lean on tooltips\u00a0to:<\/p>\n<p>Avoid confronting hard UX questionsDefer decisions on\u00a0clarityShip faster without explaining the mental\u00a0model<\/p>\n<p>But users don\u2019t build trust with popups. They build it through <strong>predictable, self-evident interfaces.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>What to Do\u00a0Instead<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Make labels do more work.<\/strong><br \/> \u201cSign\u201d \u2192 \u201cSign to approve connection\u201d<strong>Show context instead of hiding it.<\/strong><br \/> If a flow has gas fees, show how and why\u200a\u2014\u200anot just a dollar amount with a hover explanation.<strong>Design actions that <em>don\u2019t need<\/em> explaining.<\/strong><br \/> A single clear button trumps 3 ambiguous ones with popovers.<strong>Use progressive disclosure.<\/strong><br \/> Layer depth when it\u2019s <em>wanted<\/em>, not by\u00a0default.<\/p>\n<h4>Exceptions Prove the\u00a0Rule<\/h4>\n<p>Yes, sometimes tooltips are necessary:<\/p>\n<p>Explaining uncommon\u00a0behaviorOffering deeper insights for power\u00a0usersRevealing helpful keyboard shortcuts or accessibility aids<\/p>\n<p>But if <strong>every step<\/strong> needs a disclaimer, the design isn\u2019t accessible\u200a\u2014\u200ait\u2019s <strong>hiding behind a glossary.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>UX Is Not What You Say About the\u00a0UI<\/h4>\n<p>The best interfaces feel intuitive not because they were \u201csimple.\u201d But because they made <strong>language and structure do the heavy\u00a0lifting.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A tooltip should never carry more clarity than the button itself.
