Privacy by default is a call to action we often hear, but how to ensure confidentiality and transparency in DAOs are not mutually exclusive? The secret ballot idea has been around for some time. BlockVote builds on it and introduces a better way to reshape DAO decisions.

Oasis, the pioneer of smart privacy, has developed the BlockVote platform that will align with Vitalik’s call for DAOs to evolve from being a system to “just move money from A to B”. Say bye-bye to binary DAO governance and welcome polls with configurable privacy and token gating to ensure the security, confidentiality, and verifiability of all respondents.

Problems

A debilitating problem with the existing system is not only a lack of configurable privacy but also no room for group decision-making. So, what DAOs need is to move their focus from only major governance votes and start taking into account smaller, everyday decisions that are integral to community-building.

Another problem is that a sharp spike in gas fees is unavoidable when all the members start voting, even with low gas prices. Ethereum L2s can solve this, but the trade-off is the unwieldy nature of bridging DAO tokens back and forth every time a vote is called for.

While delegated voting and snapshot voting mechanisms provide some advantages, they have their own sets of limitations and challenges. End result: most DAO votes pass with 99% approval without the guarantee of them being authentic decisions.

A binary all-or-nothing system of voting yes or no is unlikely to reflect truly decentralized community-based decision-making. Moreover, while the voting results are public and on-chain, there is no way to capture the thought process or iterations of the proposal.

In the end, most DAOs remain interlocked with a rigid governance structure that is either too difficult or actually impossible to customize post-deployment.

Solution

A nuanced decision-making process, which can meaningfully influence outcomes, if needed, is the call of the hour. BlockVote incorporates some key features that will be essential for building better DAOs.

Private, customizable voting systems where a community admin can manage who gets to vote to how their votes are weighted.Enabling users to select from multiple options based on what is appropriate for each question, while each poll can be customized to have separate privacy settings and weightage systems. This level of granular decision-making leads to a more open and inclusive governance.Decision fatigue is real and often overlooked, but is factored in here. Flexibility is important, as is the power to adapt to changing contexts. Enabling DAOs to ask the right people the right questions at the right time is an unbeatable USP.Acknowledging the need to encourage better user engagement, gas fees can be covered by the community admin so that participants can vote in a gasless manner.

Intrigued and ready to revitalize DAOs?
