Japan\u2019s<\/span> Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has said that his government currently lacks sufficient information to decide whether to establish a Bitcoin strategic reserve. <\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking on<\/span> 26 December 2024, Ishiba <\/span>addressed <\/span>questions<\/span><\/a> about<\/span> whether Japan would follow other countries, such as the US, in considering Bitcoin as part of its reserves.<\/span><\/p>\n

He stated that the government does not yet understand the<\/span> \u201c<\/span>movements<\/span>\u201d <\/span>of nations exploring Bitcoin adoption for reserves, making it difficult to express a clear position.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cryptocurrencies Do Not Fall Under Foreign Exchange Category<\/span><\/h2>\n

The inquiry came from Satoshi Hamada, a member of the House of Councilors of the Party to Protect the People from NHK<\/span>, who<\/span> suggested Japan should evaluate converting some foreign exchange reserves into Bitcoin<\/span>. Hamada pointed<\/span> to the United States as an example.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, Ishiba clarified that cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, do not fall under the foreign exchange category, further complicating the matter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Global discussions about Bitcoin reserves have gained momentum. Jack Mallers, CEO of Strike, recently speculated that former U.S. President Donald Trump might designate Bitcoin as a reserve asset through an executive order if re-elected. <\/span><\/p>\n

More recently, Matador Technologies, a Canadian real-world asset tokenization firm, <\/span>has announced plans<\/span><\/a> to incorporate Bitcoin into its treasury.\u00a0The\u00a0decision, approved unanimously by the <\/span>company\u2019s<\/span> board, aims to bolster long-term capital preservation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The firm plans to allocate $4.5 million\u00a0<\/span>into<\/span>\u00a0Bitcoin this month as\u00a0<\/span>part of<\/span>\u00a0an initial investment, with additional purchases to be considered through measured buying programs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ohio has become\u00a0<\/span>the latest\u00a0US\u00a0state to consider<\/span><\/a> adding Bitcoin to its treasury reserves, following the introduction of a new bill by House Republican leader Derek Merrin.<\/span><\/p>\n

The initiative mirrors recent moves by Texas and Pennsylvania to establish Bitcoin reserves.<\/span><\/p>\n

On 12 December 2024, Texas Representative Giovanni Capriglione\u00a0<\/span>introduced the Texas Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Act<\/span><\/a>, which proposes that the state comptroller hold Bitcoin as a reserve asset for at least five years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pennsylvania took a similar step in November, with Representative Mike Cabell proposing a bill to allow its treasury to allocate up to 10% of its balance sheet in Bitcoin, citing the <\/span>asset\u2019s<\/span> potential to hedge against economic uncertainty.<\/span><\/p>\n

The growing momentum around state-level Bitcoin reserve initiatives comes amid renewed interest in\u00a0<\/span>the idea of<\/span> a federal Bitcoin reserve, a concept floated by former President Donald Trump following his re-election campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n

Just recently, Trump\u00a0<\/span>hinted at plans<\/span><\/a> for a US Bitcoin strategic reserve akin to the <\/span>nation\u2019s<\/span> strategic oil reserve. Speaking to CNBC, Trump declared,<\/span> \u201c<\/span>We\u2019re<\/span> going to do something great with crypto because we <\/span>don\u2019t<\/span> want China or anybody else \u2013 not just China but others are embracing it \u2013 and we want to be the head<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
