President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Bo Hines, a former college football player and 2022 Republican congressional candidate, as the executive director of his administration\u2019s new \u201cCrypto Council.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump announced the appointment on 22 December 2024 via his Truth Social platform, stating that Hines would serve as the Executive Director of the Presidential Council of Advisers for Digital Assets. The council will be led by Trump\u2019s pick for crypto and artificial intelligence czar, David Sacks.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn his new role, Bo will work with David to foster innovation and growth in the digital assets space while ensuring industry leaders have the resources they need to succeed,\u201d Trump <\/span>said in his announcement<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hines Received Financial Backing From Pro-Crypto PACs<\/span><\/h2>\n

Hines, who narrowly lost his bid for North Carolina\u2019s US House seat in 2022, previously received financial backing from several pro-crypto political action committees, including American Dream Federal Action.<\/span><\/p>\n

Notably, former FTX CEO Ryan Salame, now serving a seven-year prison term for illegal political contributions, reportedly donated $13.4 million to Republican candidates, including Hines.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump also revealed that Sriram Krishnan, a former Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) <\/span>general partner<\/span>, would join the Crypto Council as senior AI policy adviser.<\/span><\/p>\n

The appointments underscore Trump\u2019s ongoing support for the cryptocurrency industry. During his presidential campaign, Trump pledged to make the United States the \u201cworld capital of crypto,\u201d securing millions in campaign contributions from crypto industry executives.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to these appointments, Trump has named other prominent pro-crypto figures to key roles, including billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk. <\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Trump <\/span>nominated former Securities and Exchange Commission Commissioner Paul Atkins<\/span><\/a>, a crypto advocate, to chair the agency. Industry leaders hope Atkins\u2019 leadership will bring a more favorable regulatory environment for digital assets.<\/span><\/p>\n

Under the Biden administration, outgoing SEC Chair Gary Gensler took a stringent approach to the crypto industry, initiating enforcement actions against several high-profile companies and projects.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump has been critical of\u00a0Gensler\u2019s\u00a0policies, promising during his campaign to fire him\u00a0\u201con day one.\u201d\u00a0However, Gensler pre-empted this move by announcing his resignation, effective January.<\/span><\/p>\n

As reported, the SEC\u00a0<\/span>has<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>taken<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0tougher\u00a0stance against crypto firms in 2024.<\/span>\u00a0More specifically, the regulator\u00a0<\/span>imposed nearly $4.7 billion<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in enforcement actions against crypto companies, a 3,018% increase from 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n

More recently, Trump has also <\/span>hinted at plans<\/span><\/a> for a US Bitcoin strategic reserve akin to the nation\u2019s strategic oil reserve. <\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking to CNBC last week, Trump declared,\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re gonna do something great with crypto because we don\u2019t want China or anybody else \u2013 not just China but others are embracing it \u2013 and we want to be the head.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
