The crypto world is buzzing again. Bitcoin is climbing, altcoins are making noise, and everyone\u2019s talking about the next big thing. If you\u2019re new to crypto or even if you\u2019re not, let me share a story from the last bull run\u200a\u2014\u200aa lesson learned the hard\u00a0way.<\/p>\n

My Journey into\u00a0Crypto<\/h3>\n

Back then, I was just getting started. Like many others, I bought some Bitcoin. But then I stumbled across Flux. For someone like me, a software engineer with a passion for hardware, Flux was fascinating. They were building a decentralized cloud\u200a\u2014\u200abasically the Web3 answer to AWS or Google Cloud. I was\u00a0sold.<\/p>\n

I started mining, staking, and accumulating Flux. I was careful with my Bitcoin, storing it on a hardware wallet. But Flux was another story\u200a\u2014\u200ait wasn\u2019t supported on most hardware wallets at the time, so I kept it on the official Flux (Zelcore) wallet. I thought I was being cautious. I avoided shady projects and scams. I even joined the Flux Discord to stay in the loop. But one mistake was all it\u00a0took.<\/p>\n

The Airdrop That\u00a0Wasn\u2019t<\/h3>\n

One day, Flux announced an airdrop. I\u2019d participated in previous ones and knew I didn\u2019t have to do anything special\u200a\u2014\u200athey just showed up in your wallet. But while browsing the official Discord, someone dropped a link, claiming it could \u201cspeed up\u201d the airdrop\u00a0process.<\/p>\n

Now, looking back, it sounds ridiculous. Why would you need to \u201cspeed up\u201d an airdrop? But in the moment, it seemed legit. The link led to a page that looked exactly<\/em> like the Zelcore wallet. Without thinking, I entered my login credentials.<\/p>\n

I got an error message. Strange, I thought, but I didn\u2019t dwell on it. I was on my way home, riding the subway with no service. That gave me time to think\u200a\u2014\u200aand as my head cleared, panic set\u00a0in.<\/p>\n

The Moment I\u00a0Realized<\/h3>\n

I realized I had fallen for a phishing scam. Someone had just stolen my wallet credentials. As soon as I got off the train, I logged into my wallet, hoping I could change the password in time. But it was too\u00a0late.<\/p>\n

They had already accessed my wallet and started draining my funds. My heart sank as I saw the transactions leaving my\u00a0account.<\/p>\n

The Lucky\u00a0Break<\/h3>\n

Here\u2019s where I got incredibly lucky:<\/p>\n

They didn\u2019t lock me out of my account, so I still had\u00a0access.Most of my Flux was staked, and the scammers either didn\u2019t know how to find it or didn\u2019t have the time to figure it\u00a0out.<\/p>\n

I quickly moved my staked funds to a new wallet I created on the spot. In the end, the scammers got away with about 300 Flux\u200a\u2014\u200aworth around $400 at the time. Not a small amount, but it could\u2019ve been so much\u00a0worse.<\/p>\n

Lessons Learned<\/h3>\n

I\u2019m sharing this because the crypto space is heating up again, and with every bull run, scams come roaring back. Scammers thrive on the excitement and urgency of the moment. Here\u2019s how you can protect yourself:<\/p>\n

Use Cold Wallets Whenever Possible<\/strong>: Hardware wallets are your best bet for securing crypto. If a coin isn\u2019t supported, at least make sure your wallet is as secure as possible.Enable 2FA<\/strong>: Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security. Always use it for your hot\u00a0wallets.Don\u2019t Trust Links from Random Users<\/strong>: Only click URLs from official sources, like a project\u2019s verified website or social media accounts.Think Before You Act<\/strong>: Scams often create a sense of urgency\u200a\u2014\u200a\u201cact now or miss out!\u201d Take a breath, slow down, and think critically.Double-Check Everything<\/strong>: If something feels even slightly off, don\u2019t risk\u00a0it.<\/p>\n

Crypto is an exciting space, full of opportunities. But the very things that make it exciting\u200a\u2014\u200ainnovation, speed, and decentralization\u200a\u2014\u200acan also make it risky. As the market rises, so do the\u00a0scams.<\/p>\n
