What Is It Actually For?

On October 26, Ripple received final approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to establish Ripple National Trust Bank. Basically, it will be built around digital assets, stablecoin reserves and institutional custody.

And viewed in the context of what Ripple has been building over the past 2 years, the move makes considerably more sense.

How Ripple Got Here

Ripple began the charter process in 2025 and received conditional OCC approval in December of that year. 10 months later, it cleared the remaining organizational requirements and received final approval.

Back in December 2024, Ripple also launched RLUSD — positioning it as infrastructure for payments, treasury operations, trading and institutional settlement. By October 2026, its market capitalization had reached roughly $2.6 billion (according to Coingecko).

Meanwhile, Ripple has been expanding far beyond the cross-border payments business it was originally best known for. Today its institutional stack includes:

Ripple Payments for cross-border money movement;Ripple Custody for banks, fintechs and asset managers;RLUSD for dollar settlement;Ripple Prime for clearing, financing and multi-asset prime brokerage;Ripple Treasury for corporate cash and liquidity management;infrastructure for tokenized assets through custody products and the XRP Ledger.Source: Ripple

In 2025, Ripple bought prime broker Hidden Road for $1.25 billion, later rebranding it as Ripple Prime. The business gives institutions access to areas including digital assets, FX, derivatives and fixed income, while RLUSD is already being used as collateral for some prime-brokerage products.

A few months later, Ripple agreed to acquire treasury-management company GTreasury for $1 billion, adding corporate cash management to the same ecosystem.

So the direction is becoming easier to see: Ripple is trying to connect payments, stablecoins, custody, trading and treasury inside 1 regulated institutional infrastructure.

And federal trust bank fits perfectly into that strategy, isn’t it?

So What Will Ripple National Trust Bank Actually Do?

The approved business plan is fairly focused, RNTB will:

– manage the segregated reserve assets behind RLUSD
– act as collateral trustee for those reserves on behalf of RLUSD holders
– offer fiduciary custody of digital assets to institutional customers

What it will not do is just as important though..

This is not being created as a conventional deposit-taking bank. Ripple is not launching a new checking account or consumer lending business.

So where does fiat come into the picture?

Mainly through RLUSD reserves.

RLUSD is backed 1:1 by assets including U.S. dollar deposits, U.S. government securities and cash equivalents, (with BNY serving as the primary custodian of those reserves).

The stablecoin itself will also continue to be issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company, Ripple’s NYDFS-regulated New York trust company.

In other words, Ripple National Trust Bank does not replace the existing structure. It adds another federally supervised layer around it.

Source: Coingecko

Why Build a Bank for a Stablecoin?

For retail users, this structure may feel unnecessarily complicated, but for institutions, it is almost the point.

Stablecoin adoption by banks, asset managers and large companies depends on more than fast settlement. They also need to know who holds the reserves, who has fiduciary responsibility, how assets are segregated and which regulator supervises the entities involved.

A national trust charter puts part of that infrastructure directly under OCC supervision.

It also gives Ripple another regulated custody capability at a time when the company is increasingly connecting RLUSD with payments, trading and capital markets.

RLUSD is already used inside Ripple Payments in some jurisdictions and as collateral within Ripple Prime. Ripple also describes it as infrastructure for treasury flows, remittances and on/off-ramp services.

The bank therefore looks less like a standalone project and more like infrastructure designed to support a product that Ripple wants institutions to use in several different parts of their financial operations.

What About XRP?

Well, for now, XRP doesn’t have a specific role in Ripple National Trust Bank’s approved business plan.

The OCC documents focus on RLUSD reserve management, collateral trustee services and institutional digital-asset custody. XRP is not identified as a separate banking product… but here is still a connection:

XRP remains the native asset of the XRP Ledger, while RLUSD is available on XRPL alongside several other networks. Ripple also uses XRP across parts of its broader payments and trading infrastructure.

And because Ripple National Trust Bank will be able to provide custody for digital assets, XRP could theoretically fall within that broader capability.

XRPUSDT 1W TradingView Chart

What Happens Next?

The next step is operational: Ripple now has to bring the bank into operation and start putting the approved reserve-management and custody functions into practice.

The company says it will continue working with the OCC, NYDFS and other regulators as the bank launches and the U.S. implements its new stablecoin framework.

Ripple has spent the last few years buying and building pieces of financial infrastructure. Now it is beginning to connect them: a stablecoin, payments network, custody platform, prime broker, treasury business — and soon, a federally supervised trust bank.

Ripple Is Opening a U.S. Trust Bank.
