The ones that do own one narrow question, publish data a machine can verify, describe themselves the same way everywhere and earn coverage in the outlets AI engines actually read.

What AI citation share means for a crypto brand

AI citation share is the percentage of brand mentions a company receives across AI-generated answers for a defined set of prompts. If AI engines produce 1,000 brand mentions across your tracked prompts and 130 of them name your project, your citation share is 13%. That is roughly where Coinbase sits in the 5W index.

The metric matters more in crypto than in older finance categories. 5W estimates that about 30% of American adults own crypto in 2026, and most of them started in the last few years. They have no exchange or wallet brand they grew up trusting, so their research often ends in an AI answer. Whichever brand that answer names first has a head start on the account.

How concentrated crypto AI answers are today

The 5W Crypto & Digital Assets AI Visibility Index 2026 gives the clearest public picture I have seen of how lopsided this has become.

Coinbase holds an estimated 13.0% of citations and Kraken 9.0%, which together is more than three times the share of the next US exchange. The top 15 brands account for roughly 64% of all citations. Ranks 16 to 25 and every other brand share the remaining 36% or so.BlackRock’s IBIT holds 45% to 49% of US spot Bitcoin ETF assets and appears in nearly every “Bitcoin ETF” answer, two years after launch.DeFi platforms such as Uniswap and Aave do well on DeFi-specific prompts and are almost absent from general “buy crypto” prompts.

Read these numbers with their limits in mind. 5W labels every figure an estimate, and the prompt set covers US consumer intent only. A set of 65+ prompts is also a modest sample. Even so, the map is useful for a mid-size project, because it shows where the default answers have already formed and where they have not.

Why earned mentions still decide who gets cited

Muck Rack’s May 2026 edition of its “What Is AI Reading?” study analysed more than 25 million links cited by ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. It classed 84% of them as earned media. Paid and advertorial content made up 0.3%. Journalism alone was 27% of all cited links.

Muck Rack counts journalism, academic research, government sources, encyclopedic sites and third-party corporate content as earned. An earlier edition found the journalism share nearly doubles, to 49%, when a prompt asks for recent information. The December 2025 edition found only a 2% average overlap between the journalists PR teams pitch most and the journalists AI engines cite for a given brand. Muck Rack sells a product that tracks AI citations, so this is vendor research, though three editions have now shown the same pattern.

For crypto teams, I take two lessons from it. A paid advertorial dressed up as press coverage does almost nothing for AI visibility. And pitching the same handful of famous crypto reporters can miss the writers whose articles the engines pull from.

What a mid-size crypto project can control

Google’s own documentation on AI features and your website says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and normal SEO practice applies. Google also says you don’t need special AI text files or new schema markup for these features. Most of the work is in your own hands.

Own one question before you chase the category

The 5W data shows leaders winning narrow surfaces. Kraken gets the security prompts. Robinhood gets first-time buyers. Cash App gets “easiest way to buy Bitcoin” and Strike gets Lightning payments. A new DEX has little chance of being the answer to “best crypto exchange” this year. Its realistic target is one specific question in its niche, such as the lowest-fee DEX on one chain, backed by docs and data that prove the claim.

Tell the same entity story everywhere

AI models assemble a brand from many sources. If your website gives one launch date and CoinGecko shows another, the engine either hedges or picks the wrong one. Your project name, ticker, contract address, founders, launch date and one-sentence description should match across your site, docs, data aggregators, LinkedIn, Crunchbase and every press bio.

Replace adjectives with primary data

5W found that generic lines like “we keep your crypto safe” get filtered out, while structured trust signals such as proof of reserves and audited disclosures get cited. Publish audit reports with the firm name and date, reserve attestations, fee tables, your TVL methodology and the on-chain addresses behind your numbers. 5W also observed that Coinbase’s own institutional research now gets cited in answers about the 2026 crypto outlook. Brand-published research can become a source in its own right when it carries real data.

Write answers in the shape engines lift

Use the question as the heading and answer it in the first sentence underneath. Keep important facts in text, since Google lists text availability as a basic requirement, and keep any structured data consistent with what the page visibly says. Build plain FAQ blocks for the questions a sceptical buyer types: is it safe, who audited it, what does it cost, where is it available. Google’s guidance on helpful, reliable, people-first content applies here exactly as it does to classic search.

Fill the gaps the leaders leave open

5W found that few exchanges publish content on state-by-state availability, even though “crypto exchange in [state]” prompts are common. It also found that retirement prompts, such as Bitcoin in an IRA or crypto in a 401(k), are the fastest-growing query group in its data, and few brands address them. Gaps like these are where a smaller brand can become the cited source before a giant notices.

What I see in this work at Blockchain App Factory

I lead sales for Blockchain App Factory. Every week our SEO team reports which pages AI engines cite and why, and those reports now come up in many of my conversations with founders. One of their findings surprised all of us. A service page of ours slipped down the organic results for its main keyword, yet it kept appearing as a cited source in Google’s AI Overview for that same query. Ahrefs even reported it as position one because of the citation. Organic rank and AI citation are now separate measurements, and a team that watches only one of them can misread what is happening to its traffic.

That experience is part of why Blockchain App Factory, as a crypto marketing agency, treats AI visibility as its own workstream for clients. In practice it runs in five stages.

A prompt audit. We write the questions a buyer, an investor, a listing partner or a journalist would ask about the client’s category, run them on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, and log who gets named and which sources get linked. An entity cleanup. We line up the project’s name, description, token details and team facts across the website, docs, data aggregators and social profiles.A content rebuild around evidence. Tokenomics, audits, fees and roadmap milestones each get a plain page with dates and sources, written as direct answers.Earned coverage where engines read. PR targets come from the citation logs in stage one, which often differ from the outlets a founder most wants to appear in.A re-test every quarter, and again after any major regulatory news in the client’s market.

Our crypto marketing team still runs community building, KOL campaigns, paid media and launch PR for token launches. The AI visibility work decides what those channels point to. A KOL thread or a press feature that links to a clear, sourced explainer gives the engines something to cite. One that links to a hype-heavy landing page gives them very little.

A quarterly AI visibility self-audit

You can run a basic version of this in-house in a day or two each quarter.

List 20 to 40 prompts covering awareness, comparison, trust and purchase intent, including “is [project] safe” and “[project] vs [competitor]”.Run each prompt on at least four AI engines in clean sessions and record whether you are named, where you appear in the answer, how you are described and which URL is cited.Calculate your citation share against three to five direct competitors.Flag every factual error an engine repeats about your project and trace it back to the page it came from.Compare your name, ticker, contract address, founders and launch date across your site, docs, listings and profiles.Check that your audit, fee, tokenomics and team pages are indexed and answer their question in the first paragraph.List the publications cited in your competitors’ answers and add them to your PR plan.Re-run the prompt set within 72 hours of any major regulatory event in your target market, as 5W recommends.Check Search Console as well. Google counts AI Overview and AI Mode clicks inside the Web search type of the Performance report, so compare that data with your prompt log.

Frequently asked questions

Five quick answers for founders and marketing leads who skipped to the end.

What is AI citation share in crypto?

AI citation share is the percentage of brand mentions a crypto company receives across AI-generated answers for a set of tracked prompts. 5W estimates Coinbase at 13.0% and Kraken at 9.0% of US crypto citations in Q1 2026.

Can a small crypto project get cited by ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?

Yes. Google says a page only needs to be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear in AI Overviews, with no special optimisation required. Small projects get cited most often when they own a narrow question and back it with dated, verifiable data.

Does paid crypto PR help with AI citations?

Very little. Muck Rack’s May 2026 study found paid and advertorial content made up 0.3% of more than 25 million AI-cited links, while earned media made up 84%.

How often should a crypto brand check its AI visibility?

5W recommends a monthly audit for crypto because regulatory news resets citations often. A quarterly audit plus a re-check after each major regulatory event is a workable minimum for smaller teams.

Can a crypto marketing agency improve AI citations?

An agency can run the prompt audits, entity cleanup, evidence-based content and earned coverage that drive citations. At Blockchain App Factory, our crypto marketing team runs this as a dedicated AI visibility workstream alongside its community and KOL campaigns.

Coinbase and Kraken own 22% of crypto’s AI answers.
