The greed gauge went up anyway, because it was set before the print.

Generated using Nano Banana 2

The Verdict

Bitcoin — short term (3–5 months). $81,590, down 2.28%. It touched $84,025 before the print and turned lower right at the $84,000 wall again #1. It’s now sitting right at $81,603, the bottom of the Fibonacci zone it took back on Tuesday. The range from $80,000 to $87,000 is intact, but the market now has to price a rate hike it put at 22% a day ago. Lean: neutral, tilted lower until the Fed meets on Oct 27–28.

Bitcoin — long term (1–3 years). Bitcoin is a fixed-supply asset that settles without a bank, and each year more of it sits with funds, listed companies and lenders that don’t trade it day to day. That holder base carries the one-to-three-year case. The main risk is the one in today’s price action: real yields high enough, for long enough, that holding an asset with no yield gets more expensive every quarter.

Ethereum — short term. $2,428.99, down 3.60%. It lost $2,500 and fell further than bitcoin, as it usually does when rates move against risk assets. $2,300 is 5.3% below and is still the level that breaks the range. Getting back above $2,500 (2.9% above) would cancel today’s damage.

Ethereum — long term. Ether is a bet that banks and brokers settle tokenized assets on public rails. Today BNY and Citadel Securities ran a Treasury repo using tokenized assets on a major triparty platform #14. That’s the market ether wants to serve. Whether that business ends up on Ethereum or on private bank ledgers is the open question.

Cardano — short term. $0.2266, down 3.31%. It is now trading 2.1% under the Oct 8 flush low of $0.2315. If it closes the day here, all of October’s bounce is gone. A close back above $0.2315 would turn today into just another wick below the low.

Cardano — long term. Cardano is a bet that a slower, formally verified chain wins issuers who value correctness over speed. The market values it at about $8.5 billion, and on-chain usage hasn’t yet grown to match that. How you weigh that gap is up to you. Make your own call.

Solana and the rest. SOL $103.78, down 3.60%. BNB $728.71, down 2.15%. XRP $1.33, down 3.39%. DriveWealth will use Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin for settlement and cross-border payments #18. That’s adoption for Ripple’s dollar product. It doesn’t create direct demand for XRP itself.

Why The Market Is Here

Gasoline set the headline, and core settled the argument. September CPI rose 0.6% for the month and 3.7% from a year earlier, above the 3.6% forecast #3. Gasoline jumped 9.1% in a month and accounted for more than half the increase #1. The market expected that. It didn’t expect core: 0.3% for the month against 0.2% expected, and 2.6% for the year against 2.5% #6. One extra tenth on core was enough to tip the decision.

Who pushed: the rates desks, then the leveraged longs. CME FedWatch odds of an October hike went from 22% to roughly 44–49% #1, and CNBC cited a reading near 54% #5. The 2-year Treasury yield jumped about 10 basis points to roughly 4.9%. The 10-year rose to about 5.3%, close to a 24-year high #1. The dollar index rose 0.7%. Then the forced sellers arrived: more than $281 million in crypto positions were liquidated in 24 hours, most of them bitcoin longs and most within four hours of the release #1. Bitcoin slipped below $82,000 as yields climbed #2.

Gold fell with bitcoin. CME gold lost 1.87% while bitcoin lost 2.28%. When the problem is a hotter Fed rather than a war, the two assets that pay no yield get repriced together. Neither one hedged the other today. That’s worth remembering the next time either is pitched as protection against inflation: they hedge falling real rates, not a rising CPI number.

The oil behind the print hasn’t eased. A Houthi missile hit an Aramco administrative building in Dhahran late Tuesday, and UKMTO reported two more ships struck by projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz. That pushed Brent back to $106.32 before the CPI release #7. The building was an office, not a plant or a terminal, and Saudi output rose by more than 2 million barrels a day in September #7. So the barrels are still flowing, but the price stays high. The coalition has since struck Houthi fuel depots in Sanaa and Hodeidah, so a further reply is likely. Aid groups warn that renewed fighting in Yemen risks a humanitarian catastrophe #22. Governments are also invoking the Law of the Sea to chase sanctioned Russian tankers #23. Each of these keeps the energy premium in place, and the energy premium feeds next month’s CPI.

The pain is reaching households. Americans are telling the BBC “it’s rough out here” #26. On the corporate side, Netflix is cutting 1,000 jobs #25, and Bank of America reported a profit miss on top of a $1.2 billion money-laundering fine #24. By midday the S&P 500 was down 0.93% and the Nasdaq 1.4%. The chip selling from Korea that bitcoin ignored on Tuesday reached US tech today, through rates rather than through chips.

The greed gauge is a day behind. Fear & Greed rose to 62 from 57 even though everything on the board is red. The index takes its daily snapshot around 00:00 UTC, which was more than 12 hours before the 8:30 a.m. ET release, so it recorded Tuesday’s ETF inflow and the pre-CPI calm, not today’s liquidations. Tomorrow’s reading is the first one that reflects the print. A drop back into the 40s would tell you the move cleared out leverage. Holding above 60 at these prices would mean dip-buyers are still crowded, which leaves more room to fall.

Institutional Pulse

The ETFs turned green, one day too early. Spot bitcoin ETFs took in $175.7 million on Tuesday. Fidelity’s FBTC led with $103.1 million, BlackRock’s IBIT added $65.9 million and Morgan Stanley’s MSBT $6.7 million #9. That reverses Monday’s IBIT-only outflow #8. The money went in before the CPI release. Wednesday’s flow is the real test: if allocators keep buying after a hot print, the bid is structural. If it flips to outflows, Tuesday was positioning ahead of the number.

Strive is still buying, now with warrant money. Its 8-K shows another 2,822 BTC (about $235 million), funded by warrant exercises expected to raise $369.2 million #10 #11.

The financing models are coming under scrutiny. K33 argues that Strategy’s reliance on preferred stock could end up costing it bitcoin #12. The concern is fixed dividends on preferred shares that have to be paid whatever bitcoin does. That pressure grows as rates rise. A 5.3% 10-year Treasury makes an 11%-plus preferred look less exceptional to the income buyers it needs. Standard Chartered has pushed its $2 trillion stablecoin forecast back to 2030 because supply growth has stalled #13. That’s the same rate problem in a different market: when T-bills pay more, there’s less reason to hold dollars on-chain that earn nothing.

The infrastructure keeps getting regulated. Kraken’s parent Payward is buying Lithuania’s Saldo Bank to get an EU banking foothold #15. Qivalis won a Dutch e-money license for a euro stablecoin #16. Polygon Labs closed its Coinme acquisition, which gives it regulated payments across 48 US states #17. None of this moves price this week. All of it widens the set of regulated places where crypto can be held and moved.

OTC context. When the ETFs take in nearly $176 million and the price still falls 2% the next day, the selling is coming from somewhere else: derivatives liquidations and spot desks offloading inventory into a rates shock. Large buyers like Strive fill through OTC desks over days, not in the minutes after a CPI release. That’s why corporate buying shows up as a floor over weeks rather than a bounce on the same day.

Ledger update. Ledger has now asked resellers in seven Asian markets to pull devices after the suspected $86 million drain #19.

Calendar Watch

Thursday, 8:30 a.m. ET (21:30 JST): September PPI. It’s the last major inflation reading before the Oct 27–28 Fed decision, and with hike odds near 50%, it decides which way that coin falls. Producer prices pass through to consumer prices with a lag, so a hot PPI tells you October’s CPI is already loaded. A soft one gives the doves an argument that September was an energy spike, not broad inflation.

The Fed blackout starts Oct 17. Anything Fed officials say in the next two days is their last chance to signal before the meeting. If nobody pushes back on the roughly 50% odds, read that as acceptance.

Signals Worth Watching

$81,603, then $80,365. Bitcoin is sitting right at $81,603, the bottom of the golden zone. A daily close under it brings in the $80,365 swing low (1.5% below), and losing that opens $78,003 (4.4% below) #1. The $77,000 on-chain cost cluster sits just under that.

$84,000 has rejected three days running. It’s 3.0% above. A daily close over $84,245 is the first sign the ceiling has broken. Until then, every rally into $84,000 is a place where sellers have been waiting. CryptoQuant still argues its on-chain charts keep the “Uptober” case alive #20. This week’s inflation data is the first real test of that view.

October hike odds. Watch them after PPI. Above 60% and bitcoin probably retests $80,000. Back under 30% and today becomes a buyable dip in the middle of the range.

The 10-year at 5.3%. A clean break above its 24-year high would be the most important macro event of the month for anything that pays no yield, gold included.

ADA at $0.2315. It’s 2.1% above the current price. Reclaiming it on a daily close says today was a stop-hunt. Failing to says the October low is gone.

Brent at $104 and $110. It’s still inside the range. A Houthi strike on Saudi processing or export sites, rather than offices, is the event that breaks $110 #7.

What would change the thesis. Upside: soft PPI, Fed speakers pushing back on an October hike, ETF inflows that continue through the selloff, a close above $84,245. Downside: hike odds above 60%, the 10-year breaking higher, a close under $80,365, or a Houthi hit on Saudi oil infrastructure.

If I Had $100 This Month

The Fed decision is now a coin flip and two weeks away. You can’t trade that well, and you don’t have to. A monthly buy spread across those two weeks averages over both outcomes.

$60 → BTC. The range is intact and the ETFs were buying the day before, so this is a pullback inside a structure that hasn’t broken.$25 → ETH. It’s fallen harder than bitcoin on the rate shock, which makes for a better entry if the tokenized-settlement case is right, and a smaller loss if it isn’t.$15 → ADA. It’s under its October low, so keep it the smallest slice until it shows it can close back above $0.2315.

Hold actual coins.
