Ledger Says Organized Crime Group Spent Millions Targeting Hardware Wallet Users<\/a><\/p>\n

Ledger has issued a statement following reports from customers of loss of funds and tampered devices, calling it one the most \u201csophisticated attacks\u201d the digital asset industry has experienced.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The hardware manufacturer said Thursday that a \u201chighly organized criminal group\u201d bought Ledger devices and installed implants that could read users\u2019 seedphrases before then putting them back into the supply chain via resellers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Paris-based Ledger last week said<\/a> it had started an investigation after customers in South East Asia reported they\u2019d lost funds after buying from Malaysia-based reseller, CryptoBilis.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The company then said<\/a> it confirmed that one of the impacted users\u2019 devices contained an unauthorized hardware implant.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t clear how much money has been lost from the tampered devices but blockchain investigator Specter said $86 million had been drained. Ledger did not respond to Bitcoin Magazine\u2019s written questions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c[The criminal group] built their own logistics and technology infrastructure with seeds collector servers, draining and laundering infrastructures. They were patient, they spent millions, and they struck in one coordinated operation, draining wallets,\u201d Ledger said in a Thursday statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was no flaw in Ledger\u2019s chip, operating system or servers. Ledger\u2019s systems were not compromised. This was an attack on the distribution channel after the devices left our control.\u201d<\/p>\n

The company said that in its \u201clargest investigation to date\u201d it sent employees to other markets \u2014 including Europe \u2014 to make sure other supply chains hadn\u2019t been targeted.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It said that screened devices were clean and authorized resellers and distributors in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong have suspended their sales.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ledger added that it was working with law enforcement to \u201cfollow the funds and dismantle the attackers\u2019 infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t clear how many customers had been targeted from Ledger\u2019s statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The crypto industry is still reeling after hackers in July were able to steal<\/a> close to $120 million in bitcoin from Coldcard users.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

There have also been a number of data breaches this year, with scammers targeting Ledger to get customer information via the company\u2019s payment processor Global-e.<\/p>\n
