Almost nobody explains what it actually means, so most people nod along without really knowing what they’re checking for.

What liquidity actually is

Liquidity is the pool of money sitting behind a coin that lets people buy and sell it without the price swinging wildly. On most new coins, this is a pool containing two things, the coin itself and another asset like SOL, locked together so trades can happen against it.

When you buy, you’re not buying from a person. You’re trading against that pool, and your trade shifts the balance inside it. Buy a lot relative to the pool’s size, and the price jumps. Sell a lot, and it drops. The smaller the pool, the bigger the swing from the same size trade.

Why a small pool is dangerous, even without a scam

Say a coin has $5,000 in liquidity. A single $1,000 buy is 20% of that pool, enough to move the price sharply on its own. Now imagine you’re the one trying to sell $1,000 worth back into that same small pool, you’ll crash the price yourself just by selling, even if nobody’s trying to rug you.

This is why a coin can look fine on the chart and still trap you. The price going up doesn’t tell you anything about whether you can get back out at a similar price.

What to actually check

-Pool size relative to your trade size.A $50 test buy means almost nothing in a $5,000 pool. The same $50 means even less in a $500,000 one.
Whether liquidity is locked

Locked liquidity means the pool can’t be pulled out by the creator. Unlocked liquidity, the creator can drain the pool and leave buyers holding coins worth nothing, even without a sell-off, because the thing they were trading against is just gone.

How liquidity compares to volume

High trading volume against tiny liquidity is often a sign of wash trading, people trading back and forth with each other, not a sign of real demand.

The habit this builds

Before you buy, don’t just look at the price or the chart shape. Look at the pool you’d actually be trading against, and ask whether your position size makes sense for it. A great-looking chart sitting on $2,000 of liquidity isn’t the same opportunity as the same chart sitting on $200,000.

If you found this valuable, join my free email list.
