U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said the American authorities will soon seize $1 billion in crypto from Iran.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Speaking on Newsmax\u2019s NPolicy Summit in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, Bessent added<\/a> that economic sanctions on the Middle Eastern country were working.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Iran has been using bitcoin \u2014 and other cryptocurrencies \u2014 to skirt around U.S. sanctions. The U.S. in April started targeting crypto wallets linked to the Iranian regime, Bessent said<\/a> at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we have done has never been seen before,\u201d Bessent said Thursday on Iranian sanctions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re probably going to seize $1 billion of crypto this week,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe know where it is. We are isolating them. We did have a maximum pressure campaign, now we have an absolute isolation campaign and it\u2019s working.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bessent didn\u2019t reveal what cryptocurrencies the U.S. will seize or how.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It would be very hard \u2014 if not impossible \u2014 for the U.S. to freeze Iran\u2019s bitcoin unless it keeps it on a centralized exchange.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bitcoin, being censorship resistant, cannot be frozen. But many other cryptocurrencies, including Tether\u2019s USDT, can. Bessent previously said the feds had seized Iran\u2019s crypto in the form of the popular stablecoin.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Iran started<\/a> a bitcoin-backed insurance service for its counties shipping companies earlier this year.<\/p>\n

The Financial Times last month reported<\/a> that the Middle Eastern country was using bitcoin to settle cross-border transactions through Iranian crypto exchanges after the central bank advised its countrymen to do anything necessary to help the economy.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

U.S. President Donald Trump revived his \u201cmaximum pressure\u201d campaign weeks after returning to office. A national security memorandum signed in February 2025 put the Treasury on a sustained campaign against Iran\u2019s shadow banking, money laundering and sanctions-evasion networks.<\/p>\n
