Russia\u2019s Sberbank Given Green Light to Custody Bitcoin\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s largest bank has announced it is the first in the country to have been approved to custody bitcoin.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sberbank said<\/a> in an announcement Wednesday that the Bank of Russia gave the company the green light for \u201cdigital currency record-keeping\u201d and to facilitate the transfer of such assets. It said that bitcoin and other, smaller cryptocurrencies were given approval.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Russia is fast moving ahead with regulating digital assets in the country. Russian President Vladimir Putin this month signed<\/a> a law to set in stone the regulation of digital currencies and digital rights in the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cCustomers will be able to conduct cryptocurrency transactions via SberBank Online, SberInvestments, and the SberBusiness online banking platform,\u201d the bank said in a statement, adding that no new apps or platforms will be released.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It added: \u201cFor users, this means that digital currency transactions are moving into familiar banking interfaces \u2014 complete with standard customer identification, transaction monitoring, and reporting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before mass rollout, the bank will provide the service for a limited number of customers, it continued.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sberbank in July revealed<\/a> plans to debut a Bitcoin and crypto wallet as well as digital asset custody by December. The Bank of Russia in July published draft regulations for crypto trading, and the State Duma has this year prepared<\/a> the comprehensive regulation of digital assets.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite the rollout, using digital assets as a means of payment or legal tender within Russia is still banned. Using crypto as a form of payment has been prohibited in Russia since 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n

President Putin has appeared to praise Bitcoin in the past, once saying<\/a> that the leading cryptocurrency can\u2019t be stopped.\u00a0<\/p>\n
