PCE was the event this market was waiting for, and it came in soft. Bitcoin popped to $85,598.94 within minutes, then slipped back to around $84,400 #1. That high sits at the top of the $82,600–$85,600 band bitcoin has traded in all week, and inside the long-term holder supply zone that capped Tuesday’s rally. When good macro news can’t clear a level, the sellers at that level matter more than the news. CryptoQuant puts short-term holders’ unrealized profit margin at 33%, the highest since December 2024, and says spot demand is contracting #6. The trend is intact, and the quarter closed up roughly 40% #8. But the next leg needs fresh spot buying, not better data.

Bitcoin — long term (1–3 years). The long-term case for bitcoin is a supply transfer: coins moving from traders who sell into rallies to holders who don’t sell at all. This quarter showed it happening. ETF buyers absorbed billions while short-term holders took the largest single-day profit of the year on September 22 #6, and price still finished Q3 about 40% higher. If that transfer keeps running through a year when the Fed is raising rates rather than cutting, the float left for trading keeps shrinking. If ETF demand fades before it’s done, bitcoin stays a range trade.

Ethereum — short term. $2,683.47, up 0.46%, flat while bitcoin moved. Spot ether ETFs posted about $3 million of outflows on Tuesday, ending a seven-session streak that brought in more than $851 million #5. BlackRock’s ETHA and Fidelity’s FETH both lost money. Ether gained around 66% in Q3, beating bitcoin #8, so some of this is holders banking a strong quarter. The $2,300 invalidation is 14.3% below.

Ethereum — long term. Ether’s long-term case depends on whether people hold it as an asset, for staking yield and as collateral, or just rent it as a leveraged version of bitcoin. This quarter’s 66% gain says the market still treats it as high-beta bitcoin. Robinhood’s plan to offer US users 10x ether perpetuals makes renting even easier #12. The bull case needs balances that stay staked and put to work on-chain through the quiet months, not just ETF flows that reverse the first time the price stalls.

Cardano — short term. $0.2474, up 1.11%, moving with the market. The only Cardano-related item in the window: ADA is on the list of assets Robinhood plans to offer as perpetual futures for US users, at up to 3x leverage #12. That’s a new way to trade ADA. It isn’t new demand for the coin.

Cardano — long term. Cardano’s long-term case is that its network earns steady use of its own, rather than riding the market. Right now the gap is easy to see. ADA’s market value is about $9.3 billion, against roughly $70 billion for Solana, and exchange listings and derivatives access don’t close that gap by themselves. Compare the on-chain activity behind each number and make your own call.

Solana and the rest. SOL $119.36, up 0.92%, and up almost 59% for the quarter #8. BNB $769.79, up 2.05%, was the best of the majors. XRP $1.51, down 0.83%, was the only major in the red.

Why The Market Is Here

Inflation cooled across the board. August core PCE rose 0.2% on the month and 3.0% on the year, against forecasts of 0.3% and 3.3%. Headline PCE came in at 3.4% against 3.7% expected #1. Before the release, ADP said private employers added 90,000 jobs in September, above the 70,000 forecast #2. The Fed raised rates this month for the first time in three years #9. After the report, CME’s FedWatch put the chance of another hike in October at about 37%, with 62% for a hold #1.

Consumers spent more, not less. Personal spending jumped 0.9% in August #3, the biggest increase in about a year #4. That complicates Tuesday’s picture of a consumer at a 12-year confidence low. People say they feel worse and spend more anyway, which keeps the economy running hot enough that the Fed can’t rule out another hike.

The front end relaxed. The long end didn’t. The 10-year yield fell about 4 basis points to 5.22% right after the release, and the 2-year eased to 4.87% #2. Later in the session, the 30-year was up about 3 basis points near 5.62%, still close to its highest since 2002 #14. So who is pushing, and why? Traders buying short-dated debt are betting the Fed is close to done. Buyers of 30-year bonds are still asking for more, because a cooler monthly inflation print doesn’t change a decade of war-related borrowing and energy risk. Stocks took the relief. The S&P 500 was up about 0.6% and the Nasdaq about 1.1% by mid-session. Bitcoin, which trades against real yields and liquidity, got the first half of that move and not the second.

Energy pressure spread beyond Hormuz. Kpler estimates Middle East crude exports at just under 80% of pre-war levels, the highest since the war began, and one analyst says Iran is “losing its influence” over the strait #9. But projectiles hit three ships in the waterway on Tuesday. Brent was still on track for about a 13% gain in September, and US strategic reserves are depleted, which leaves a thinner buffer against the next disruption #9. Russia also launched its largest attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since spring #10, and UK households face their biggest energy bill increase in four years #11. The shock that fed inflation hasn’t ended. It has moved from crude to diesel, gas and power, which is exactly the part of the supply chain the long bond is worried about.

Washington’s crypto window is getting shorter. A Reuters/Ipsos poll puts Trump’s approval at a career-low 32%, with just 17% approving of his handling of living costs, and analysts are openly discussing his party losing both houses in November #9. The industry has already stopped waiting on the Senate. Stand With Crypto rolled out its first Senate endorsements on Wednesday, two weeks after the Clarity Act failed its cloture vote #13. Crypto is now partly a bet on a policy environment that may have less time left than prices assume.

Institutional Pulse

The bitcoin ETF streak reached nine days. Spot bitcoin ETFs took in $66.2 million on Tuesday, double Monday’s figure, extending the streak to about $3.1 billion. IBIT and ARKB led, and year-to-date net inflows are back to roughly $1 billion #5. That’s steady, but it’s a fraction of the $999 million day that opened last week #8. At $60–70 million a day, the ETFs are absorbing profit-taking. They aren’t overpowering it.

The alt holders are heading for the exit. The seven-day count of altcoin deposits to exchanges hit 78,000 on September 28, up about 160% in two weeks. The number of addresses sending altcoins to exchanges nearly tripled, to its highest since October 2025 #7. Coins usually go to exchanges to be sold. After a quarter in which ether, Solana and XRP all outran bitcoin, that’s holders getting ready to lock in gains. Those deposits show up on-chain, where everyone can see them. The buying on the other side often doesn’t. ETF creations are mostly filled through OTC desks, away from the exchange order book, so a deposit spike can look worse on a chart than it turns out on price.

Leverage is coming to US retail. Robinhood plans to offer US users perpetual futures on bitcoin, ether, Solana, XRP, Dogecoin, ADA, LINK and HYPE, with up to 10x on bitcoin and ether and 3x on the rest, cleared through Bitstamp #12. Open interest was at its lowest since March this week. A new pool of leveraged retail money in the coming months could make moves in both directions sharper.

Calendar Watch

Friday, October 2. September payrolls, and SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce’s last day. ADP already beat, so a strong government number would push October hike odds back up from 37%. Friday, October 9. XRPL’s Batch amendment. October 27–28. FOMC. After PCE, this is now a real decision, not a formality.

Signals Worth Watching

$85,600. It capped bitcoin all week, and PCE didn’t break it. A daily close above it, 1.7% away, opens $87,354, the eight-month high, and then the $87,722 yearly open. Until then, every push into $85,000 is a chance for profitable short-term holders to sell.

$82,500 and $80,000. $82,500 is the bottom of this week’s range, 2.0% below. FXStreet flags $80,000 as the main line to defend in Q4, 5.0% below #8. The $78,788 weekly level, 6.4% below, is still the one that would reverse September’s breakout.

The 30-year vs. the 2-year. If the 2-year keeps falling while the 30-year holds above 5.6%, the market believes the Fed is close to done but doesn’t trust the long-term fiscal outlook. That’s a steeper curve, and bitcoin has struggled with it. A 30-year back under 5.45% would be the first sign that cooler inflation is reaching long-term bonds.

Altcoin deposits vs. prices. If deposits stay elevated and ETH, SOL and XRP start underperforming bitcoin, the Q3 alt rally is being sold. If prices hold while deposits run hot, buyers are absorbing it.

Ether ETF flows. One red day after $851 million in seven sessions isn’t a trend. Three in a row would be.

What would change the thesis. Upside: a daily close above $85,600, ETF inflows back above $200 million a day, and a 30-year yield below 5.45%. Downside: hot payrolls that push October hike odds back above 50%, net ETF outflows, and a daily close under $82,500. A weekly close under $78,788 would undo September’s breakout.

If I Had $100 This Month

Cooler inflation took some Fed risk off the table, but it didn’t bring in new buyers above $85,000. You don’t need to guess whether payrolls break the range. A monthly buy works either way.

$60 → BTC. ETF demand is steady, the quarter ended up about 40%, and it’s the asset with the cleanest supply story, so it stays the core of the buy.$25 → ETH. It outran bitcoin in Q3, but its ETF buyers just took a day off, so buy it at a steady pace rather than chasing strength.$15 → ADA. Wider access through new derivatives isn’t the same as on-chain demand, so keep the position small until the network gives it a reason to move on its own.

Hold actual coins. Not ETF shares, not equity proxies.

This is how I’d think about it.
