Both countries rank 20th and 22nd on the Big Money Adoption Index.Sub-Saharan Africa’s on-chain value received grew 13.4% over the period, driven almost entirely by peer-to-peer activity. P2P activity in the region grew from 4.5% to 8.1% of crypto activity.Nigeria also ranks №1 in the world for peer-to-peer economy and cross-border flows. South Africa ranks №4 and №3 for each, respectively.Cross-border stablecoin transactions grew globally as regulatory clarity increased. However, new regulatory drafts in South Africa could impact its cross-border stablecoin activity.

Chainalysis’ newly released 2026 Global Crypto Adoption Index, which covers the fiscal year from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026, paints a picture of a resilient global crypto economy. The global crypto economy overcame what Chainalysis describes as “the worst market since 2022.”

Despite the huge drop in market cap, on-chain activity dropped only slightly, 1.6%, from $9.5 trillion to $9.4 trillion. This drop is reflected in the decline in economic activity of crypto services.

Chainalysis reports that the value flowing into exchanges, DeFi protocols, and other crypto businesses fell 4.3%, from $9.30 trillion to $8.90 trillion, as the broader bear market cut into trading and speculative activity.

For peer-to-peer transactions, the story is much different. P2P transactions grew across the globe. Intranational P2P activity (money moving between personal wallets within a specific country) recorded a 302.9% increase from $56.8 billion to $228.7 billion, driven by 96% stablecoin and utility-driven activity.

Sub-Saharan Africa’s On-chain Economy Driven By P2p Activity Grew 13.4%

Despite the drop in global on-chain activity and in market cap, Sub-Saharan Africa stood out. The region’s on-chain value grew 13.4% over the period.

Chainalysis attributes the bulk of that growth to a surge in peer-to-peer transactions. In the last report, P2P accounted for just 4.5% of the region’s total on-chain economy. That number grew to 8.1%.

Nigeria And South Africa Lead The World In Peer-To-Peer Adoption

Chainalysis’ new methodology ranks 117 countries across four factors: service inflows, domestic peer-to-peer transfers, cross-border transfers, and on-chain balances. Together, those factors form the overall Grassroots Adoption Index.

On the global grassroots adoption index, Nigeria placed third, behind only Brazil and the United States, despite ranking a modest 18th in both total service flows and on-chain balances.

Nigeria’s overall score rose because of its peer-to-peer economy and cross-border flows, where it ranks №1 globally for both. South Africa ranked ninth on the adoption index, following a similar pattern. Its total flows ranked 33rd and balances 16th, but its peer-to-peer economy ranked №4, and it ranked №3 in cross-border flows as well.

The reason is simple. Crypto adoption in Sub-Saharan Africa isn’t driven by trading or speculation but by real-world use. Sub-Saharan Africa remains the highest remittance corridor in the world via traditional banking systems, costing more than double the global average.

This cost has led individuals and small businesses across the region to find new ways to send money to each other and to suppliers without incurring the costs of traditional systems or the volatility that can come with holding funds in local currency.

Nigeria leads in Cross-border flows amid stablecoin boom

Chainalysis found that global cross-border stablecoin transfers rose 77.5% from $124.2 billion to $220.3 billion. This boom, Chainalysis says, is driven by increasingly clear regulatory activity across the globe, from the US’s GENIUS Act to MiCA in the EU.

The data suggests regulatory clarity gave stablecoins room to evolve from crypto assets into payments infrastructure rather than just a trading tool.

This growth is not driven by institutional transactions but by transactions that Chainalysis says average about $3,000, a figure that aligns more with everyday use cases such as supplier payments and individuals sending money back home.

Once again, Nigeria and South Africa led the world in cross-border flows, with Nigeria ranking number 1 and South Africa, number 3.

South Africa and the Cross-Border Dilemma

As the global regulatory landscape for stablecoins and cross-border transactions has become clearer, the opposite seems to be happening in South Africa.

The South African Reserve Bank’s Draft Crypto Asset Manual for Cross-Border Activities, paired with the Draft Capital Flow Management Regulations 2026, would bar South African businesses entirely from using crypto rails for cross-border transactions, including supplier settlements and remittances, where most of the world’s cross-border stablecoin activity is concentrated. It would also let individuals move crypto abroad but not bring it back onto a licensed South African platform.

South Africa’s crypto industry has warned that the draft treats all crypto assets the same, whether they’re volatile tokens or dollar-pegged stablecoins used for settlement.

It also warned that, if passed, regulators would strip South African firms of a genuinely useful cross-border settlement tool, just as stablecoins are becoming one internationally.

Given that South Africa already ranks third in the world for cross-border flows, a rule that specifically restricts cross-border crypto activity directly threatens the position and volume the country has built.

The Big Money Adoption Index and African B2B stablecoin infrastructure

Chainalysis’ companion Big Money Adoption Index, which measures larger, more institutional flows, ranks Nigeria 20th globally and South Africa 22nd, both far behind their grassroots rankings.

While the gap between the grassroots adoption ranking and the big money adoption ranking is significant, it shows that crypto utility in both countries is driven by retail and small-business use and, increasingly, institutional flows.

This comes as crypto firms across the continent build stablecoin infrastructure aimed specifically at business-to-business use. Yellow Card’s pivot away from consumer trading toward B2B stablecoin rails and moves by firms like Busha and Kredete to build out stablecoin-based payment infrastructure point to the same underlying shift.

African crypto firms are increasingly treating stablecoins as payments and settlement plumbing for businesses, not just a retail trading product.

That build-out is exactly the kind of activity South Africa’s draft cross-border rules would restrict. If the SARB manual proceeds in anything like its current form, South Africa risks widening the gap between grassroots adoption and big-money adoption, driving away institutional investment and activity.

Why This Matters

Crypto activity growing in Sub-Saharan Africa despite a global decline challenges the notion that crypto adoption in the region is driven by speculative activity.

African crypto activity is not driven primarily by people trading tokens for profit. It’s driven by people and businesses using stablecoins to do things that an unstable local currency or an expensive, slow banking corridor makes hard. 2026 has seen a surge in the development of stablecoin infrastructure aimed at this problem by African crypto firms.

Regulators across the continent, especially Nigeria and South Africa, need to consider the motivations driving crypto and stablecoin use in the continent as they create regulatory guidelines. Regulation that doesn’t take this into account risks stifling growth in the region and industry.

Originally published at https://cryptoafrica.news on September 25, 2026.

Nigeria & South Africa Lead Global P2P and Cross-Border Crypto Flow Ranking: Reports — Crypto… was originally published in Coinmonks on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Nigeria & South Africa Lead Global P2P and Cross-Border Crypto Flow Ranking: Reports — Crypto Africa Nigeria and South Africa both lead Chainalysis’ 2026 Global Grassroots Crypto Adoption Index at number 3 and number 9, respectively.
