Since then, that idea has grown into something much bigger.

On September 17, World launched World Money, a new self-custodial financial app beginning its rollout across more than 150 countries.

It brings stablecoin balances, payments, trading, rewards, virtual accounts and Mini Apps into one product — while World’s identity layer is increasingly moving into a separate app of its own.

I’ve had a soft spot for World for a while, partly because the project keeps evolving in directions that are difficult to reduce to one crypto narrative. It started with a very up-to-date question — how do you prove there is a real human behind an online account in an AI-heavy internet? — and is now trying to connect that identity layer to everyday financial activity.

World Money makes that strategy much easier to see.

So What Is World Money?

World describes it as a “financial super app for humans”

That sounds broad… but the product itself is fairly concrete. Instead of switching between a wallet, an exchange, a payment app and an earning product, World wants more of those activities under one interface. Inside World Money, users can:

¤ hold stablecoin balances across 8 supported currencies
¤ send supported digital assets internationally using a World username
¤ receive funds through personal virtual accounts where available
¤ deposit eligible assets into reward programs powered by Morpho
¤ buy and sell digital assets through connected exchanges
¤ access Mini Apps including Kalshi, Credit and Morpho
¤ track portfolios, transaction history and price alerts

In the U.S., Stripe is also powering a new funding flow: users can use Apple Pay to convert ordinary money into stablecoins that generally arrive in their self-custodial wallet within minutes.

That last part matters because self-custody has historically come with a UX problem. Owning your keys is one thing; getting salary, fiat or everyday money into that wallet without understanding bridges, networks and gas is another.

World has already been working on that gap: in late 2025, it expanded virtual accounts powered by Bridge, allowing users in supported markets to receive salaries or bank deposits that are automatically converted into USDC. By then, World App reported nearly 38 million users and more than 850 million transactions.

World Money essentially turns many of those experiments into a more deliberate financial product.

Why Split World ID and World Money?

This may be the more important part of the update. Until recently, World App was trying to do almost everything: hold a World ID, provide a wallet, move stablecoins, host Mini Apps and connect users to the broader ecosystem.

Now the structure is becoming clearer:

World ID App → identity
Proof of human, verification, credentials and access to human-only services.

World Money → finance
Wallet, payments, stablecoins, trading, rewards and virtual accounts.

World confirmed this split in September. Existing users do not need to rebuild their identity or create everything from scratch; their verification and credentials can carry over between the products.

There is a practical logic to separating them.

Identity infrastructure needs to work across Tinder, Zoom, DocuSign, ticketing platforms, AI agents and potentially thousands of services that have nothing to do with crypto. A financial app, meanwhile, needs its own UX around balances, transfers, investing and compliance.

Trying to make one app represent both ideas eventually becomes limiting; and World’s own explanation gets close to the underlying thesis:

“Money moves differently when accounts belong to people.”

In other words, the company is betting that proof-of-human can eventually become an extra trust layer for digital money, especially as AI makes fake users, bots and synthetic identities cheaper to create.

$WLD Reacted

The product announcement also coincided with a noticeable move in Worldcoin (WLD).

WLD closed September 17 around $0.384 and jumped to roughly $0.425 on September 18, a gain of about 10.7% in a day. The token continued trading around the $0.42-0.43 area afterward, which matches the two green daily candles visible on my chart.

WLD 1D WhiteBIT Chart

I wouldn’t attribute that entire move to World Money. Crypto rarely gives us such clean cause-and-effect, and WLD had other market-specific catalysts around the same period — but the timing is still notable.

The much bigger chart tells a less comfortable story…

WLD’s all-time high remains around $11.74, reached in March 2024. At roughly $0.43 today, the token trades about 96% below that peak.

What Exactly Is $WLD Part Of?

World today is better understood as several connected layers rather than one app:

World ID is the proof-of-human protocol. It lets someone prove they are a unique real person without necessarily disclosing their name, email or other conventional identity data. Orb verification uses iris biometrics to establish uniqueness, while newer credentials expand the ways users can prove attributes or personhood.World Chain is the network’s blockchain. It launched in October 2024 as part of the Optimism Superchain and was designed to prioritize transactions from verified humans, including priority blockspace and gas allowances.Worldcoin (WLD) is the ecosystem’s native token, launched in July 2023. Eligible verified users can claim allocations of WLD, while the token was designed for utility and future governance within the network. Its initial supply cap is 10 billion WLD for the first 15 years. And Tools for Humanity, co-founded by Sam Altman and Alex Blania, builds several of the products around the network and operates World Money. World itself is broader than a company owned by Sam Altman; the protocol and ecosystem also involve the World Foundation.

How World Got Here

2023 — Worldcoin launches publicly

World App arrived in May, initially combining World ID with a simple self-custodial wallet. In July, the Worldcoin protocol launched publicly alongside WLD and completed key migrations to OP Mainnet. By the end of that year, World App had passed 5 million accounts and 30 million transactions.

2024 — Worldcoin becomes World

This was the year the identity experiment started looking more like an ecosystem. World App 3.0 introduced Mini Apps, World ID 3.0 expanded credentials and privacy features, and World Chain launched on mainnet. The project also dropped “coin” from the main brand: Worldcoin became World, reflecting a mission that had grown beyond the token itself. By year-end, World reported more than 20 million network participants and nearly 10 million verified humans.

2025 — finance becomes more practical

Virtual accounts powered by Bridge began connecting ordinary bank deposits and payroll to USDC balances. Instead of asking employers to understand crypto rails, the conversion happened underneath the product. World App was approaching 38 million users by December.

2026 — identity starts leaving the wallet

World introduced its biggest World ID architecture update yet and launched a dedicated World ID App. The proof-of-human layer began appearing in use cases spanning Tinder, Zoom, DocuSign, ticketing and AI-agent infrastructure. By April, almost 18 million people had completed Orb verification across a network spanning 160 countries.

And now:

September 2026 — World Money becomes its own product

The original World App idea has effectively split into two clearer propositions: one app proving who is human, another helping those humans move and manage money.

What I Think Is Getting More Interesting

What keeps me interested in World isn’t really the Orb anymore — and it isn’t WLD price alone either. It is the architecture that is gradually appearing underneath everything.

For years, crypto products treated identity and money as almost opposite ideas: wallets were supposed to be pseudonymous, financial apps cared mainly about addresses and balances. Identity lived somewhere else.

AI changes that equation:

if bots and autonomous agents become capable of opening accounts, interacting with platforms, buying services and sending money, then knowing when a transaction involves a verified human could become genuinely useful infrastructure.

World is betting heavily on that future. The strategy now looks something like:

prove human → create trusted account → give it financial rails → let third-party apps build around both

World Money does not prove that this model wins. And a token trading 96% below its ATH is a fairly strong reminder that ambitious technology and investment performance can travel on completely different timelines.

But I still think World is one of the projects worth following precisely because it keeps trying to answer a question that will probably become more important, not less:

What does a digital economy look like when humans and AI agents increasingly share the same internet?

From World ID to World Money: The Ecosystem Is Getting Bigger was originally published in Coinmonks on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Three years ago, World entered crypto with an ambitious proposition: scan your iris, prove you are human… and receive a digital identity that could travel with you online.
