Our parents grew up without the internet, smartphones, or the constant pressure to build a \u201cperfect\u201d life\u00a0online.<\/p>\n<p>And then there is <strong>Gen\u00a0Z<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A generation that grew up with Wi-Fi, smartphones, social media, global crises, academic pressure, economic uncertainty, and an endless stream of bad\u00a0news.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Gen Z is often called <em>too sensitive<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>They are told to \u201ctoughen up,\u201d stop complaining, work harder, and deal with their problems like previous generations did.<\/p>\n<p>But there is a question we rarely\u00a0ask:<\/p>\n<p><strong>What if Gen Z isn\u2019t mentally weaker? What if they\u2019re simply more willing to talk about what\u00a0hurts?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>The Silent Strength of Older Generations<\/h3>\n<p>Previous generations often had a different definition of mental strength.<\/p>\n<p>Being strong meant keeping your problems to yourself.<\/p>\n<p>You didn\u2019t talk about anxiety at work. You didn\u2019t tell your friends that you were struggling with depression. You didn\u2019t necessarily go to\u00a0therapy.<\/p>\n<p>You carried your problems\u00a0quietly.<\/p>\n<p>That silence created resilience in some people. They learned to tolerate hardship, adapt to difficult circumstances, and keep moving\u00a0forward.<\/p>\n<p>But silence isn\u2019t always strength.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes it is simply survival.<\/p>\n<p>Many people from older generations experienced mental health struggles without having the vocabulary\u200a\u2014\u200aor social permission\u200a\u2014\u200ato discuss\u00a0them.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of saying, \u201cI\u2019m burned out,\u201d they might have said, \u201cI\u2019m\u00a0tired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead of saying, \u201cI\u2019m depressed,\u201d they might have said, \u201cIt\u2019s just a difficult phase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead of asking for professional help, they often told themselves:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI\u2019ll get through\u00a0it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And many\u00a0did.<\/p>\n<p>But we shouldn\u2019t confuse <em>enduring pain silently<\/em> with <em>being mentally healthier<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3>Gen Z Lives in a Different Kind of\u00a0Pressure<\/h3>\n<p>Gen Z faces problems that are difficult to\u00a0escape.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine waking up and immediately opening your\u00a0phone.<\/p>\n<p>Before breakfast, you\u2019ve already seen someone\u2019s vacation, someone\u2019s promotion, someone\u2019s relationship, someone\u2019s new apartment, someone\u2019s perfect body\u200a\u2014\u200aand three international crises.<\/p>\n<p>Social media turns comparison into a 24\/7 activity.<\/p>\n<p>You aren\u2019t simply competing with the people in your classroom or workplace anymore.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re comparing yourself with millions of\u00a0people.<\/p>\n<p>And the internet never tells you when you\u2019ve done\u00a0enough.<\/p>\n<p>There is always another skill to\u00a0learn.<\/p>\n<p>Another career\u00a0goal.<\/p>\n<p>Another achievement.<\/p>\n<p>Another person who appears to be doing\u00a0better.<\/p>\n<p>For Gen Z, the pressure isn\u2019t only <strong>\u201cCan I succeed?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cAm I succeeding fast\u00a0enough?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That constant comparison can create anxiety, loneliness, low self-esteem, and\u00a0burnout.<\/p>\n<h3>But Gen Z Has Something Previous Generations Didn\u2019t<\/h3>\n<p>Awareness.<\/p>\n<p>Gen Z is more comfortable using words like <em>anxiety, burnout, boundaries, therapy,<\/em> and <em>emotional exhaustion<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>They talk about mental health on social\u00a0media.<\/p>\n<p>They encourage friends to seek\u00a0help.<\/p>\n<p>They question toxic workplaces.<\/p>\n<p>They are more likely to say, \u201cI need a break,\u201d instead of pretending everything is\u00a0fine.<\/p>\n<p>Critics sometimes see this as weakness.<\/p>\n<p>I see something else.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Self-awareness is a form of strength.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Knowing that something is wrong is the first step toward changing\u00a0it.<\/p>\n<p>Asking for help isn\u2019t weakness\u00a0either.<\/p>\n<p>It takes courage to\u00a0admit:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI can\u2019t handle this\u00a0alone.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>So, Which Generation Is Mentally Stronger?<\/h3>\n<p>The honest answer is: <strong>we can\u2019t say that one generation is universally mentally stronger.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mental strength isn\u2019t a competition between generations.<\/p>\n<p>Older generations often developed resilience through real-world hardship, responsibility, and learning to function despite difficult circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>Gen Z is developing resilience through a different environment\u200a\u2014\u200adigital overload, uncertainty, rapid social change, and greater awareness of psychological well-being.<\/p>\n<p>Both have strengths.<\/p>\n<p>But they also have weaknesses.<\/p>\n<p>Older generations may sometimes suppress emotions instead of processing them.<\/p>\n<p>Gen Z may sometimes overanalyze emotions or become overwhelmed by information and comparison.<\/p>\n<p>One generation may say, <strong>\u201cJust get on with\u00a0it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The other may say, <strong>\u201cLet\u2019s talk about how I\u00a0feel.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the healthiest approach is somewhere between the\u00a0two.<\/p>\n<h3>We Don\u2019t Need a Stronger Generation.
