MSCI said it was weighing up the decision as Strategy is primarily known for holding a large amount of Bitcoin rather than running a traditional operating business.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p>Digital assets are assets. Index providers should measure markets, not decide which assets companies are allowed to own. MSCI\u2019s proposal puts it out of step with regulators, markets, and its own customers. Bitcoin doesn\u2019t need MSCI. Neither does Strategy. <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/search?q=%24BTC&amp;src=ctag&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">$BTC<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/search?q=%24MSTR&amp;src=ctag&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">$MSTR<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Strategy (@Strategy) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Strategy\/status\/2088234192844870091?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 14, 2026<\/a>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Writing on X Friday, Strategy <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Strategy\/status\/2088234192844870091\">wrote<\/a>: \u201cDigital assets are assets. MSCI\u2019s proposal puts it out of step with regulators, markets, and its own customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It added: \u201cBitcoin doesn\u2019t need MSCI. Neither does Strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The consultation also included Japanese Bitcoin treasury <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/tags\/metaplanet\">Metaplanet<\/a>, which trades on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, and uranium investment company Yellow Cake.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on financial filings as of May 2026, Strategy and Metaplanet already meet the criteria for removal under MSCI\u2019s proposed rule.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If MSCI adopts the proposal as currently written and their financial profiles remain unchanged, both companies would be deleted from the MSCI ACWI IMI Index as part of the November 2026 Index Review, triggering forced selling by index-tracking funds and loss of future passive inflows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MSCI is still gathering feedback on the proposal through September 30, and has explicitly said the consultation \u201cmay or may not result in changes to MSCI indexes\u201d \u2014 meaning the rule could be modified, delayed, or dropped entirely based on responses from affected companies and market participants. Even if adopted, any changes to a company\u2019s underlying financials before the review could also shift the result.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nasdaq-listed Strategy \u2014 formerly MicroStrategy \u2014 started buying Bitcoin in August 2020 as a way to generate better returns for its shareholders during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has since spent around $63.3 billion on Bitcoin and is the largest corporate holder of the asset. Investors can buy its shares to gain exposure to the leading cryptocurrency without having to buy and hold digital coins themselves.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strategy spawned a long-list of copycat firms which have bought not only Bitcoin, but other cryptocurrencies to boost their stock prices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strategy\u2019s stock (MSTR) was trading nearly 3% lower Friday at nearly $95 per share.
