They watch GPU shipments, electricity demand, and the billions of dollars flowing into artificial intelligence infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>But those numbers mostly tell us how much money is being spent to <em>build<\/em>\u00a0AI.<\/p>\n<p>A much harder question\u00a0is:<\/p>\n<p><strong>How much is the world actually willing to pay to use\u00a0it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That is what a little-known metric called the <strong>LLM Token Expenditure Index<\/strong> is trying to\u00a0measure.<\/p>\n<p>And if the AI boom ever begins to crack, this may be one of the first places we see\u00a0it.<\/p>\n<h3>First, what exactly is a\u00a0token?<\/h3>\n<p>Large language models do not read and write words the way humans\u00a0do.<\/p>\n<p>They process information in smaller units called\u00a0<strong>tokens<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A token can be a word, part of a word, punctuation, or another fragment of text. When you send a prompt to an AI model, you consume input tokens.
