It arrives at the <strong>same conclusion <\/strong>our work points\u00a0toward:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Intelligence alone is not\u00a0enough.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>winner of the AI race<\/strong> doesn\u2019t need<strong> <\/strong>the best frontier model if it <strong>integrates near-frontier AI<\/strong> faster into its economy, state apparatus, and global distribution channels.<\/p>\n<p>What should worry Western AI companies is that\u200a\u2014\u200aon the <strong>philosophical and<\/strong> <strong>developmental<\/strong> level<strong>\u200a<\/strong>\u2014\u200a<em>China already\u00a0is.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Integrating <strong>near-frontier systems<\/strong> <strong>faster, cheaper, <\/strong>and <strong>more systematically<\/strong> into the real economy is something its <strong>AI+ Initiative<\/strong> <em>is<\/em> <em>designed to\u00a0advance.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an <strong>inconvenient reality <\/strong>the West needs to <strong>wake up to<\/strong>\u200a\u2014\u200a<em>and\u00a0fast.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Or Western AI companies risk competing on <strong>cost, integration, and<\/strong> <strong>deployment\u200a\u2014\u200a<\/strong>only after <em>someone else<\/em> has already set the\u00a0terms.<\/p>\n<p>That future still spooks Western AI companies and jittery markets: <strong>DeepSeek was the\u00a0preview.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>What DeepSeek Actually\u00a0Proved<\/h3>\n<p><strong>DeepSeek mattered<\/strong> because it showed that AI leadership is not secured by <strong>frontier capability alone<\/strong>. A cheaper, near-frontier model was enough to <strong>shake the market\u2019s confidence<\/strong> in the Western AI infrastructure trade.<\/p>\n<p>That does not mean<strong> China has already won<\/strong>. It means the next phase of competition will be decided by <strong>deployment, cost, integration, and economic usefulness.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anthropic\u2019s own framework points to the same conclusion: Intelligence matters, but <strong>intelligence only becomes power<\/strong> when it is adopted, distributed, and made resilient in the real\u00a0economy.<\/p>\n<p>That is <strong>execution access. <\/strong><em>And execution access is alignment.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yet neither side has <strong>calculated alignment <\/strong>into their plans for global market dominance.<\/p>\n<p>Neither side has calculated the reaction time, track conditions or wind resistance to decisively <strong>win this race<\/strong>: A<strong> <\/strong>sprint not a marathon.<\/p>\n<p>That is a <strong>strategic mistake.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>A big\u00a0one.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One the <strong>winner will not make\u200a<\/strong>\u2014\u200aand maybe already\u00a0hasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<h3>AI Alignment Is the Adoption Layer: How the Race will be\u00a0Won<\/h3>\n<h4>Why Alignment Matters<\/h4>\n<p>AI alignment is not yet seen by either side as the <strong>core adoption driver <\/strong>for AI, or its key competitive and commercial edge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alignment is still treated too narrowly: <\/strong>As a safety discipline, a governance problem, or a technical field concerned with model behavior. Those questions matter. <strong>But they do not go far\u00a0enough.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Relegating the subject to debates on system objectives, decisions, and behaviors that match human intentions and values is a tactical oversight\u200a\u2014\u200a<strong>potentially fatal<\/strong> in commercial terms. It\u2019s born of a <strong>skewed view<\/strong> that the other race participants are behind when they are quickly edging\u00a0ahead.<\/p>\n<p>As the <strong>key technical field <\/strong>dedicated to making AI systems safe, ethical, and reliable\u200a\u2014\u200aso they reliably do what humans actually want them to do\u200a\u2014\u200a<strong>alignment is the\u00a0key.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Make no mistake\u200a\u2014\u200aalignment is <em>not<\/em><strong> <\/strong>a <strong>side\u00a0issue<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>It is the <strong>adoption layer<\/strong> that will win (or lose) the AI\u00a0race.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>commercial logic<\/strong> is clear. If an AI does not improve the <strong>user\u2019s real position<\/strong>\u200a\u2014\u200aeconomically, practically, and repeatedly\u200a\u2014\u200ait will not <strong>earn durable adoption<\/strong>, no matter how capable the model becomes. And the race for that <strong>particular AI model<\/strong> is over before it has\u00a0begun.<\/p>\n<p>Who would want a subscription for it? <strong>Users don\u2019t adopt ideology.<\/strong> They adopt tools that make their lives <strong>easier, cheaper, faster<\/strong>, or more valuable.<\/p>\n<p>Exe\u2019s thesis is that the <strong>decisive alignment question <\/strong>is economic:<\/p>\n<p>Does AI <strong>return value <\/strong>to the users whose <strong>activity powers\u00a0it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That begets the question <strong>no AI company is asking<\/strong> (or can yet\u00a0answer):<\/p>\n<p>At <strong>what foundational level <\/strong>do users <strong>first need AI to\u00a0align?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Winning the Alignment Race<\/h4>\n<p>The execution layer is where <strong>alignment stops being rhetoric<\/strong>. But the deeper question\u00a0is:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who benefits when intelligence becomes\u00a0action?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Exe\u2019s execution access layer is where <strong>alignment becomes real. <\/strong>Models can reason. It should be <strong>structurally aligned<\/strong> toward <strong>expanding human economic agency<\/strong> for every user. The US economy has effectively placed an<strong> enormous bet on an AI industry<\/strong> that still has no fully <strong>proven path to profitability<\/strong> at scale. Compute is expensive. Inference is expensive.
