A new HBO documentary, \u201cElectric Money: The Bitcoin Mystery,\u201d <\/em>by Cullen Hoback, aired on Oct. 8. It\u00a0suggests that Peter Todd, a 39-year-old software developer, might be Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious creator of Bitcoin.<\/p>\n

However, the documentary\u2019s<\/a> evidence is largely circumstantial, focusing on Todd\u2019s early involvement with Bitcoin and his connections to other key figures, such as cryptographer Adam Back.<\/p>\n

Key pieces of evidence include a 2010 forum post<\/a> in which Todd seemingly continues Nakamoto\u2019s thoughts and a chat transcript in which Todd discusses \u201csacrificing\u201d Bitcoins.<\/p>\n

The filmmaker interprets it as potentially referring to Satoshi\u2019s untouched BTC stash, which is over a million coins worth around $65 billion.<\/p>\n

Todd: I\u2019m Not Satoshi<\/h2>\n

BitMEX Research said, \u201cThis is clearly ridiculous,\u201d and it is just an example of Todd replying to Satoshi with a \u201csnarky, pedantic, and accurate comment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the kind of comment Peter could make today. There is zero reason to believe this was Satoshi.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Forbes, HBO will say that @peterktodd<\/a> is Satoshi\u2026<\/p>\n

The Forbes article states that \u201ca 2010 BitcoinTalk post replying to Satoshi Nakamoto that [Cullen] Hoback believes was accidentally posted using Todd\u2019s profile\u201d<\/p>\n

Todd isn\u2019t widely known in crypto circles but does maintain a presence on X, where he has 167,000 followers. He has a controversial online persona and connections to Ukraine, posting<\/a> this on Oct. 9 after mainstream media picked up the story.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have some personal connections to Ukraine, and I\u2019ve been there multiple times during the full-scale invasion [\u2026] giving talks to the Ukrainian Bitcoin community.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to a CNN interview with the documentary\u2019s director, Cullen Hoback, Peter Todd explicitly denied being Satoshi Nakamoto, calling the film \u201cirresponsible\u201d and claiming it puts his life in danger.<\/p>\n

Todd stated that HBO did not approach him before the film\u2019s release and did not offer him a chance to screen it, but Hoback remains confident in his conclusion despite the denial.<\/p>\n

\u201cCullen is grasping for straws here,\u201d Todd told CNN<\/a> before adding, \u201cHe is playing up a few coincidences into something much more. Ironic, really: that\u2019s a hallmark of conspiracy thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n

So Who Is He?<\/h2>\n

Todd is a 39-year-old graduate of Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, and he would have been 23 when the Bitcoin white paper was being completed.<\/p>\n

He claims to have started communicating with key crypto influencers and cypherpunks when he was about 15.<\/p>\n

Castle Island Ventures partner Nic Carter who has known Todd since 2017, said \u201cHe is one of the most important Bitcoiners, from a technical perspective,\u201d but doesn\u2019t believe he is Satoshi.<\/p>\n

Bitcoiner Jameson Lopp was also skeptical about the claim.<\/p>\n

Wherever Satoshi may be, I like to think they\u2019re having a laugh at this latest round of foolishness.<\/p>\n

There was no reaction on Bitcoin markets<\/a>, with the asset doing the same thing in its range-bound channel and changing hands for $62,260 at the time of writing.<\/p>\n
