For years, the Beijing-based company Bitmain Technologies has dominated the Bitcoin mining business, controlling an estimated 90% of the global market for the specialized computers used to power the cryptocurrency\u2019s decentralized network.\u00a0<\/p>\n
But now, Bloomberg reports <\/a>that Bitmain\u2019s reign is facing an \u201cunprecedented threat\u201d as rising political tensions and the prospect of a Donald Trump presidential comeback threaten to upend its stranglehold on the industry.<\/p>\n During his first term, Trump, a self-proclaimed crypto skeptic, has changed his heart. Now, the former president calls for Bitcoin to be \u201cmined, minted and made\u201d in the United States while also hinting at creating <\/a>a Bitcoin Reserve for the country, casting Bitmain\u2019s dominance as a national security risk.\u00a0<\/p>\n This rhetoric, coupled with growing concerns that Bitmain\u2019s equipment could be used for alleged espionage, has opened the door for Bitmain\u2019s emerging rivals to make significant progress.\u00a0<\/p>\n Rajiv Khemani, CEO of California-based startup Auradine <\/a>and a Bitmain competitor, told Bloomberg that there are several reasons why the former president might want to challenge a scenario where there is a single dominant Chinese mining company, including national security concerns.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n The shift of Bitcoin mining <\/a>to the US after China\u2019s crackdown has intensified scrutiny of who\u2019s mining cryptocurrency on American soil and where the hardware is coming from.\u00a0<\/p>\n In May, President Joe Biden ordered a Chinese mining company called MineOne to vacate and sell a property in Wyoming, citing concerns over \u201cforeign-sourced equipment\u201d that could enable \u201csurveillance and espionage activities.\u201d<\/p>\n While the government has not presented public evidence of Bitmain\u2019s rigs being used for espionage, the political climate has created an opening for Bitmain\u2019s rivals <\/a>to capitalize.\u00a0<\/p>\n California-based Auradine, for instance, raised $80 million in April and began shipping its first mining machines in late July.
