Why My Money Is Probably Gone
See, when I made that transaction, I wasn\u2019t dealing with a bank. With a bank, I could call them up, talk to a human, and they could probably reverse the wire transfer. Crypto doesn\u2019t work that way. I initiated a transaction on a decentralized blockchain, and it was instantly verified and recorded. Once it\u2019s confirmed, it\u2019s irreversible. There\u2019s no central authority, no customer service line, no \u201cundo\u201d\u00a0button.<\/p>\n
If I was lucky, I mean really lucky, the address I sent it to was an exchange address I just slightly mistyped. In super rare cases, an exchange might be able to help you recover the funds if they own the mistyped address, but they usually charge a huge fee, if they even do it at\u00a0all.<\/p>\n
But in my situation, it was just a random, unknown external wallet. I\u2019ve essentially given control of my money to a complete stranger. They have the private key for that wallet, and I definitely don\u2019t. The crypto isn\u2019t \u201clost\u201d in the system; it\u2019s exactly where I told the network to send it. It\u2019s just not in a place I can\u00a0access.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s an awful feeling, like watching cash burn up. I\u2019ve had to accept that this mistake was an incredibly expensive lesson in patience and triple checking.
