Earlier this year, Ripple <\/span>announced<\/span><\/a> it will launch<\/span> a stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the American dollar. It will be called RLUSD and\u00a0<\/span>will be<\/span> available on the XRP Ledger (XRPL) and Ethereum. According to CEO Brad Garlinghouse, the product could\u00a0serve as a bridge between the cryptocurrency industry and traditional finance<\/span>, while<\/span> numerous analysts believe its eventual launch could positively impact XRP\u2019s price.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last week, Ripple\u2019s team <\/span>minted<\/span><\/a> over 800,000 RLUSD on XRPL and Ethereum, representing 99% of the total supply. <\/span>This<\/span> caused speculation that the stablecoin is already live.<\/span><\/p>\n

The company<\/span>, though,<\/span> assured it is still in the private beta testing phase.<\/span> It also cautioned users to beware of dubious individuals who claim the opposite.<\/span><\/p>\n

Controversy With the SEC\u2026 Again<\/span><\/h2>\n

Ripple\u2019s plans to introduce a stablecoin caused <\/span>huge<\/span> excitement in <\/span>the<\/span> cryptocurrency <\/span>space<\/span>.<\/span> However, it was not welcomed by everyone, with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) <\/span>describing<\/span><\/a> it as a \u201cnew unregistered crypto asset.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This<\/span> is not the first quarrel between the entities. To the uninitiated ones, the SEC <\/span>sued<\/span> Ripple in December 2020, accusing it of conducting an unregistered securities offering by selling XRP tokens. The case passed through numerous developments over the years, reaching an important milestone in August 2024. <\/span><\/p>\n

Back then, Judge Torres determined that the sales of XRP on secondary markets to retail investors did not constitute securities transactions. Nonetheless, she <\/span>ordered<\/span><\/a> Ripple to pay $125 million for violating <\/span>certain<\/span>\u00a0securities laws.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The figure represents a massive discount on the $2 billion initially sought by the regulator, causing many to declare the ruling a major Ripple victory. Both parties have until October 7 to appeal, and the SEC seems more likely to do so. <\/span><\/p>\n

Over the past few weeks, there have <\/span>been increased<\/span> rumors about such a potential scenario. American lawyer Fred Rispoli, for example, <\/span>thinks<\/span><\/a> the chance for an appeal is 60%.<\/span><\/p>\n
